WHAT IT IS
Meta AI is the AI research arm of Meta; its Fundamental AI Research group (FAIR) was founded in 2013. It has long published open research in computer vision, self-supervised learning and generative models. From 2023 it released weights for the Llama family for research and commercial use, serving its own products while distributing the models externally.
Why it matters
The Llama family shipped with open weights, letting academia and startups fine-tune near-frontier base models for the first time, which directly seeded an entire ecosystem around open-weight models.
