WHAT IT IS
Mistral AI was founded in Paris in 2023 by a team from DeepMind and Meta. It entered with smaller, more compute-efficient models and ships both open-weight versions and a commercial API. Its models are frequently used as base models within the open-weight camp.
Why it matters
It showed that Europe can also produce near-frontier models, and its dual-track "open weights plus commercial service" model made it one of the most substantial players in the open-weight camp.
