WHAT IT IS
Ollama was founded in 2023 and provides a command-line tool for running open models on a local machine. It wraps downloading, quantisation and execution into simple commands, lowering the barrier to deploying models on personal devices.
Why it matters
It freed "running a model locally" from a pile of scripts and dependencies, letting individual developers use open-weight models directly without a cloud API.
