WHAT IT IS
Grok is a conversation model xAI released in November 2023, closely tied to the social platform X and able to draw on the platform’s near-real-time public information. xAI was founded by Elon Musk in 2023. Grok-1 is a 314B-parameter mixture-of-experts model whose weights were released as open source in March 2024. Later versions added image understanding and are offered both as a standalone app and as X’s built-in assistant.
Why it matters
It bound a model directly to a social platform’s live feed, a different route from purely offline-trained models, and released the Grok-1 weights so that an otherwise closed lab left behind a reproducible open model.
