WHAT IT IS

Hugging Face Hub is the open hosting platform for models, datasets and apps (Spaces), run by Hugging Face since 2016. It versions each item as a Git repository with large-file storage, so every model has a citable identifier, history and file list. It answers the distribution question of the open-weights ecosystem — where a model lives, how to fetch it and how to reuse it — folding artifacts from different frameworks into one access pattern.

Why it matters

It gave the open-weights ecosystem a shared identifier and versioning scheme, so downloading, reusing and tracking models finally had a common format — making it the de facto hub of this layer.
