WHAT IT IS
Lyria is a music-generation model Google DeepMind announced in November 2023. It produces instrumental and vocal music from text prompts and was used in features such as YouTube’s Dream Track, letting creators generate short music clips from a written description. It is part of Google’s work with the music industry on generative music. Lyria’s weights are not open.
Why it matters
It was an early attempt by a large technology company to bring music generation into a mainstream content platform, and it helped put “describe a piece of music in words” features into consumer products.
