WHAT IT IS
Optimus is a humanoid robot project whose prototype Tesla showed in September 2022, aiming at a general-purpose bipedal robot. It plans to reuse the visual perception and neural networks Tesla built up for self-driving, letting the robot learn to do tasks by seeing. Early prototypes could walk and perform simple manipulation, and later versions continued to iterate on dexterous hands and walking ability.
Why it matters
It transplants the perception and neural networks trained for cars onto a humanoid robot, a representative case of general-purpose robotics reusing an autonomous-driving stack.
