Cohere was founded in Toronto in 2019; co-founder Aidan Gomez is a co-author of the Transformer paper. It offers language-model APIs to enterprise customers and invests heavily in embeddings and reranking, the two retrieval stages. Models are delivered both through the cloud and on-premises.

It was early to make the building blocks of enterprise retrieval and RAG a product line of their own, so embeddings and reranking stopped being an afterthought next to the large model.
