WHAT IT IS
Pinecone was founded in 2019 and provides a managed vector database service. It offers storage and nearest-neighbour search for embedding vectors as a cloud service, for retrieval and RAG workloads.
Why it matters
It turned vector search from a component you had to run yourself into an on-demand cloud service, becoming part of the infrastructure that made RAG an engineering practice.
