WHAT IT IS
Pinecone is a managed vector database introduced in 2019 for storing and retrieving vector embeddings. It offers approximate nearest-neighbour search with metadata filtering, without the user operating the index. It addresses the storage and performance of the retrieval layer as vector counts grow in cases such as RAG.
Why it matters
It made vector indexing and approximate nearest-neighbour search a managed service, so RAG did not have to build its retrieval layer from scratch.
