WHAT IT IS
GitHub Copilot is a coding assistant from Microsoft-owned GitHub, built with OpenAI and first offered as a technical preview in June 2021; it provides code completion as an editor plug-in. It continues code from the current file and its context, and also lets you ask questions in natural language and rewrite selected code inside the editor. GitHub Copilot covers major editors including VS Code, Visual Studio and JetBrains.
Why it matters
It was the first large-scale deployment of a large-model coding assistant, bringing “AI pair programming” into everyday development workflows.

Capabilities
Related concepts
Agents & Tool Use
Let a model do more than answer: search, call APIs, run code — and decide the next step from what came back
Prompting & Alignment
Making a model helpful, honest and harmless is harder than simply making it bigger
Inference Optimization & Serving
Training happens once; inference happens a billion times a day — and serving is torn between fast first tokens and high throughput, which usually pull against each other
