WHAT IT IS
Doubao is a general model and eponymous app ByteDance introduced from August 2023. ByteDance’s model team is later known as Seed and handles foundation-model research. Doubao targets everyday scenes such as chat, writing, retrieval and office work, delivered through a standalone app and several product lines, with image input supported. Beyond serving users directly, it is offered to developers as an API and wired into many ByteDance products.
Why it matters
It put model capability inside a mass-market app distributed through an existing product matrix, representing China’s “model attached to a super-app” route as opposed to selling purely via API.
