Siri
The early voice assistant that brought spoken control to mainstream phones
WHAT IT IS
Siri is the voice assistant Apple introduced with the iPhone 4S in October 2011, letting users control the phone, look up information and set reminders by speaking naturally. It strings speech recognition, intent understanding and task execution into one pipeline, and was among the earliest voice assistants to reach consumer electronics at scale. In 2024 Apple announced it would rebuild Siri’s architecture around Apple Intelligence.
Why it matters
It brought natural-language voice control to mainstream phones as early as 2011; its first-generation architecture was superseded by the Apple Intelligence route in 2024.
