WHAT IT IS
Midjourney is a text-to-image service that Midjourney, Inc. launched in 2022 and keeps updating. It began as a Discord bot: users type a prompt and the service returns images, and a web interface was added later. Unlike open-weight models, Midjourney is a closed service used through a subscription. Its iteration has long focused on visual style and composition, and it offers image-to-image, upscaling and local edits.
Why it matters
With subscriptions and a community-style interface it turned text-to-image into a mass consumer product, winning users on image aesthetics without disclosing the model — a contrast to the open-weight route.
